Applicants are not required to participate in fundraising or public relations activities without their expressed and voluntary permission.
Timeline: CSDA’s program first consists of a 6-week handler course where you will learn the basics of training with CSDA and the standards for service dogs in our program among other things. After that course, you may have your dog evaluated to be trained as a service dog or you may be placed with a dog provided by CSDA. Training a service dog is no easy task. There are many variables that can influence how long your dog’s training may take, such as:
1. Dog’s age at time of evaluation
2. Dog’s training to date at time of evaluation
3. How much training is needed for dog to pass Public Access & Task Training
4. How much time YOU can spend working with your dog
Depending on the above answers, it can take a minimum of 6 months or up to 2 years to train a service dog.
Steps Involved:
- Complete Handler course (6 weeks)
- Get an initial evaluation of your dog first to make sure they have what it takes OR meet the dog provided to you by CSDA (2-4 weeks)
- Start Basic Obedience Training (1 month)
- Train in new places under increased levels of distraction (1 month)
- Work towards passing the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test (3 months)
- Work towards passing the Public Access Test (3 months)
- If dog is showing good progress and no concerning behavior, move on to task training pertinent to your disability. (3 months)
- If dog passes above tests and can perform at least 3 tasks to mitigate your disability, you now have a legitimate Service Dog through California Service Dog Academy.
California Service Dog Academy will usually contact you regarding your status in the program within 2-4 weeks of submitting your application. You will receive updates about your status in the program approximately every month until you are accepted into the program.
